…Working On Your Business?
Now, what do I mean by this? What are you doing in those 30 minutes a day?
You are learning something new about your business. Or looking at our financial trends to understand what is working and what is not working. You could put together a revenue action plan or review your expenses. You could look for ways to increase cash. You could start launching that new service or product that you have been thinking about.
Or maybe you have been thinking about starting a new business, you can work to launch this. The options are endless.
No, you can’t do everything in just 30 minutes but what about for 30 days. What could you do in 15 focused hours? Much more than you might think.
We live in the days of distraction. With open office plans, instant messenger, texting, phone notifications, and email, it does not seem to be getting better. People seem to value responsiveness over focus and deep work. We have a tendency to check email, Facebook, or LinkedIn first thing in the morning.
In Cal Newport’s book, “Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World“, he states the following:
The Principle of Least Resistance: In a business setting, without clear feedback on the impact of various behaviors to the bottom line, we will tend toward behaviors that are easiest in the moment.
Basically, it is so much easier to just keeping doing what have been doing. Answering an email or text is much easier than doing something new. Also, you feel needed and wanted so you want to respond.
Is this best for your business though?
What should we be doing?
This is where 30 minutes a day on your business will be invaluable.
Eggs In One Basket
It is a common expression that we don’t want to put all your eggs in one basket. For years, I had only one source of income and when I lost this source, I lost all my eggs. Some business owners have one client that is the majority of their revenue. If you lost this client, it would be detrimental to your business. Maybe you have a product this is not recession proof so when the economy goes bad, you are at risk. Check out this post of what happened with Michael Hyatt had one client that paid the bill.
How valuable would it be if you came up with a plan to diversify if you just spend 30 minutes a day?
Trying Something New
I must admit right now that when I say this, it probably makes some of you nervous. It makes me nervous. I actually hosted two live webinars in the last week. I had never done this before and it took some time. I stepped out of my comfort zone and tried something new. The material was not new to me at all but the format, promotion, and recording were all new.
What are you doing that is new in your business? Do you know where your business is headed? Would you like more insight into your business? Would you like to shape the trajectory of your business?
